OF BALI-YATRA®
An initiative that is driven by
the glorious maritime history of Odisha.
OF BALI-YATRA®
& Old Capital Of Odisha
The first edition of 'The Pride & Glory Of Bali-yatra' was held at Cuttack, Odisha.
This ancient capital of Kalinga and the medieval port town is from where ships,
laden with merchandise, would sail for Bali, Indonesia, to trade with the people
and
see much traffic of commerce and culture.
And the curtain raiser of
'The Pride And Glory Of Bali yatra'
initiative was held at the Odisha
State Maritime Museum, at
Cuttack,
in November 2013, during the
'Boita Bandana'
festival and traditional
'Bali-yatra' trade fair that is held there,
every year, to commemorate the glorious
maritime history of
Odisha and ancient
trading links across South East Asia.
OF BALI-YATRA®
Calcutta did not exist in medieval times
but, as Capital of British India,
was very central to all that was
happening during the British Raj.
And that included expeditions to explore archaeological sites across South East Asia, excavations to unearth more than what was visible on the surface, restoration and preservation of these age-old monuments and transporting pieces of this heritage to showcase at the Indian Museum in the city.
The city continues to be the cultural capital of India and, therefore, was a natural choice as a centre for us to present editions of 'Rediscovering India International Of Yore'.

Delhi, the good old capital of India, is far
away from coastal India;
but the city
played a very central role in the traffic
of commerce and culture
- between
countries in Central Asia & Greco-Roman Europe and India - and passage
of that traffic to and from across the country which, however, is another story.
And New Delhi, being the capital
of modern India, made
sense as a centre to showcase editions of 'Rediscovering
India International Of Yore' to the world.
OF BALI-YATRA®
Bhubaneswar, a twin city with Cuttack,
is an ancient temple town
and
the modern capital of Odisha.
Bhubaneswar means 'Abode Of The Gods' and the good old temple town had, at one time, as many as one thousand temples.
And the modern capital is a boom town
that is bustling with political, commercial and cultural activity.
Naturally, the city which is at the core of all
that is Odisha had
to be a centre for us to
showcase editions of 'The Pride And
Glory
Of Bali-yatra' to the world.
